There are many reasons people choose to travel as tourists globally, from new experiences to rest and relaxation. Architecture tourism is among the most popular types, with a $7.2 billion market size in 2024 alone. People visit architecture tourist attractions to study them, experience them in person, and get a feeling for their history.
While everyone has different tastes and preferences, there are certain architecture tourst attractions that seem more popular. Tourists flock to architectural wonders like the Namsan Tower, as seen in KPop Demon Hunters, because they combine architectural ingenuity, history, and pop culture.
Cologne Cathedral
The Cologne Cathedral, officially titled the High Cathedral Church at Cologne, is one of the most recognizable sights in Europe. This is the tallest twin-spired church in the world, and the third-tallest church of any kind. They built it in the famous Gothic architectural style, which is quite popular in the North-Western region of Europe.

The Cologne Cathedral’s construction began in the distant 1248, but due to various factors, construction finished in 1880. UNESCO added this architectural marvel to the World Heritage Sites list in 1994, making it one of 54 located in Germany. This is a tourist site that attracts over 6 million visitors per year, which is why we included it in our list.
Sydney Opera House
There are few architecture tourist attractions as recognizable as the Sydney Opera House. This architectural masterpiece, built in the 20th century, lies on the foreshore of Sydney Harbor. It is one of the most distinctive buildings in the world, the work of Danish architect Jørn Utzon.

Construction on the Sydney Opera House began in 1958, led by the architectural team of Peter Hall, who followed Utzon’s designs. Queen Elizabeth II officially opened it in 1973, but it wasn’t until 2007 that it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list. The Sydney Opera House hosts over 1,500 events every year in all of its venues, with nearly 1.5 million attendees.
Pyramids of Giza
The Pyramids of Giza are one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, remaining a massively popular tourist attraction to this day. The Pyramids of Giza consist of the Great Pyramid, the Pyramid of Khafre, and the Pyramid of Menkaure. Additionally, this archaeological site includes the Great Sphinx and the surrounding pyramid complexes.

In fact, the UNESCO World Heritage list includes Memphis and its Necropolis, the Pyramid Fields from Giza to Dahshur. Ancient Egyptians built all of the pyramids in this complex from 2600 BC to 2500 BC. They constructed them honor of the three rulers: Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure in the age of the Fourth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom. As one of the top architecture tourist attractions in the world, they receive between 3.5 and 5 million visitors yearly. It is also the object of multiple celebrated stories in movies, video games, books, and TV.
